A CAPE MEDITERRANEAN BLEND, ONE OF A KIND!

Five friends spent years talking about making wine. Between them they carry decades of hands-on experience across the drinks industry.  Made by friends, for friends. Maze is what happened when they combined everything they knew, tasted, and believed a red wine could be.

MAZE IS A SERIOUS WINE THAT COMES TO MEET YOU!

The idea is simple to state and hard to copy. The “Cape” refers to the origin of the fruit: South African grapes, grown in South African soil. The style comes from the Mediterranean, and not just in spirit. The Cape shares its climate too: warm days, cool nights, ocean air on both coasts. The same conditions that shaped the wines of Italy are at work here, producing freshness, the red fruit, and that feeling of a wine made for food at the end of a long day.

THE MOTLEY CREW.

Alongside the founding partners sits a second circle: The Motley Crew, close, wine-loving friends and, in their own words, “fortunately able to enjoy the dividends.” Those dividends aren’t on a balance sheet; they’re an open invitation to tastings, called whenever the shareholders want to get everyone together and celebrate living in South Africa over a glass of something spectacular.

The Crew are our beloved lab-rats. They keep us honest as winemakers and hold us accountable to what we promised.

CAPE-MED Notes.

Maze is more than a new wine; it is a trademarked category. Distinguishable from its carbonic red fruit driven components, this style draws inspiration from the freshness and food-friendliness of Italian and Southern Rhône wines while remaining uniquely South African.

How Five Friends Rediscovered Their Inner Child (And Made a Wine About It)

Children learn by being inquisitive. By being excited about the unknown. There's a Peter Pan quality to it,  that pull toward exploration and adventure, that willingness to learn through new experiences, good and bad, all while laughing from the bottom of their bellies.

Somewhere along the way, most of us lose that. Life gets serious. Curiosity gets scheduled around calendars and commitments.

We didn't want to lose it entirely.
Late February, and the Motley Crew are back at Infanta for the annual fishing tour, a ritual this group of old friends has kept going for years. As the tide starts to push, three tin boats make their way back to Camp Minx. Prawn baskets are empty after another thrilling afternoon chasing spotted grunter, and the Crew are ready for a cold refreshment. Strict rules on the river: no drinking and fishing. So the Crew are parched, and ready to go.
So, how much time do we have?

I find it fascinating to look at so many winemakers and their different winemaking techniques, styles and flavour perceptions. How they choose their grapes, when they harvest, what influence they have on the grape-growing conditions and, at the end of it all, how they age their wines.

The parallel wine universes are endless.
